Delphi is a popular and powerful programming language, boasting a very simple syntax. It has features such as regular expressions, flexible type system, and strings with Unicode support. In the past few years Delphi has been enjoying a resurgence of interest because it's highly productive and well suited to mobile app development. Delphi is a programming language of the Object Pascal family. It was created in 1993 by Borland. Delphi 6.0 has been available since 2007, with new major releases being released every six months or so. Delphi started off as an 'enterprise' language but it has since become more popular with developers who build small to medium sized applications. In 2010 Microsoft acquired the rights to the Delphi programming language from Borland for an undisclosed sum, and have begun porting modern versions of Delphi to run on Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8. To promote Delphi programming on small devices, Microsoft worked with Embarcadero to create XE3. Delphi allows programmers to write code in a visual proxy of the object-oriented language Pascal. It uses its own Object Pascal compiler which can compile code at remarkable speed, up to 1.5 million lines per second. Pascal was originally created way back in 1969, by Niklaus Wirth who wanted to develop an easy-to-use system that would help students learn programming while avoiding the complexities of languages like C and Fortran. Pascal is an imperative language that focuses on easy-to-understand syntax. This is because Pascal was designed with the school of thought that it would be most useful to teach programming to students with no previous experience. It has since become popular in academia, most notably for computer science courses at universities. Delphi started off as an 'enterprise' language but it has since become more popular with developers who build small to medium sized applications. Delphi supports object-oriented programming (OOP) and OOP concepts like classes, properties, methods and events. Delphi exposes the ability to create control interfaces, allowing users to layout GUI controls like buttons, textboxes and combo boxes that respond to events (called messages). It also allows for interaction between different components in a system, such as providing access to files and databases. Delphi has one of the best managed code implementations when it comes to intercepting application crashes and reporting errors. Delphi is a graphical programming language, meaning that you create all the necessary code using the component window. This may be an issue for people who prefer writing their own code from scratch rather than dragging and dropping various components into a user interface (UI). However, it does allow you to see your output and decide what happens when an event occurs (called messages) like a button press or keystroke, and this can speed up development time significantly compared to writing everything from scratch. eccc085e13
